A Note on This Beer

Craft Beer & Brewing’s official rating for Standard’s Apostle Saison is a 96 out of 100. This is an “Extraordinary - World Class” score from a panel of certified BJCP judges who essentially live and breathe beer!

In other words, Apostle is a BIG frickin’ deal.

And, if the score isn’t enough to raise your eyebrows, the taste almost certainly will. To craft this small-batch beauty, the brewers started with a mixed-culture Saison base and let it rest for 9 months in neutral oak on a pile of Balaton and Montmorency Sour Cherries!

Then, they bottled it up with a dose of Brettanomyces for further conditioning. That was 9 months ago, and the final result is exquisite!

As the Craft Beer & Brewing team noted when they gave Apostle near-perfect scores for aroma and flavor, this brew delights with a “rosé aroma and look; more like vinous fruit than cherry. The same subtlety expresses in the sip, with a Brett farmhouse note balanced by light white-wine grape and faint hit of stone fruit."

In fact, the only thing that’s an even bigger deal than the beer itself is the fact that Standard let us have a small 430-bottle stash to send out-of-state. Their beers normally never even leave Seattle!

Not world class, maybe in the sour class but not saison.

Not too oaky or tart. Right balance of fruit flavor and even a hint of pie crust sweetness on the front and back end. Great warm weather drinker. Near perfect!

Surprisingly subtle sour and cherry! Some mild funk, chewy, bready, spicy, white wine notes throughout from the saison base. The cherries come through as candied/brandied cherries and semi sweet red wine. I thoroughly enjoy this!

Sour-forward farmhouse/saison ale, with a very mellow tail of light cherries.
