A Note on This Beer
After waiting seven years to get the barrels they needed -- Hopping Frog brewing has re-released their most reclusive Imperial stout: B.O.R.I.S. Royale aged in canadian whiskey barrels that were practically dripping in whiskey after multiple years of use.
Last released in 2010 to critical acclaim, Royale's accolades in the community are stellar again (4.31 on untappd), Almost everyone finds the smooth boozy texture and rye spice from the whiskey influence a delectable luxury.
Explosive whisky aromas burst through everlasting tan cream foam, reawoken from a long slumber. Brown sugar, molasses, and white sugar roll into permeating and powerful darkly brûléed caramel. Toasted whole grains -- oats and rye -- give echoing nuance to its dark chocolate base. The legally required three years of barrel aging for the Canadian Whiskey gives this extra smooth, slowly unfolding 9.4% ABV warmth.
B.O.R.I.S. Royale is a homage to that famous conversation in Pulp Fiction about what Parisians call their burgers. In the movie, ‘Royale’ is just a fancy name, but in this beer ‘Royale’ means so much more -- it means it imprint of Canadian Whisky riches that only a luxury monger would seek.
