A Note on This Beer

My grandpa immigrated from southern Germany, so he doesn’t mess around when it comes to decadent desserts. Every year for his birthday, he requests a slice of Black Forest Cherry Cake.

Or, as he calls it in his thick Bavarian accent, “Schwarzwälder Kirschetorte.”

Knowing his love for all things chocolate and cherry, I can’t wait to introduce him to today’s Black Forest Cake Stout! This mouthwatering collab comes from the pastry chefs at Untitled Art and Hubbard’s Cave — two breweries who take dessert just as seriously as Grandpa.

To bake (*ahem,* brew) this decadent concoction, the brewers used a blend of juicy cherry purée, bittersweet cacao nibs, velvety vanilla, and creamy lactose. On the nose, it’s an intoxicating bouquet of rich, fudgey brownie batter. Flavors of fluffy chocolate sponge cake, luscious whipped cream, and the pop of sweet-tart cherries erupt from every sip.

And, with its birthday party-worthy 9.5% ABV, this Imperial Stout is sure to have even octogenarians like Grandpa leaping to the dance floor!

I’m itching to see the look on his face when he gets a taste! The question is, how do you say “cake beer” in German?

Rated 4.20 on Untappd!

Tastes just like Black Forest cake. First sip you taste and smell the rich chocolate with a hint of buttercream and cherry. I like that the cherry doesn’t taste like cough syrup. Very good.

Surprisingly good. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this beer but the flavors that came through were distinct, crisp and enjoyable. A really nice blend.

I would say this beer did a really good job of getting the chocolate and cherry flavors. Definitely had that rich and sweet taste to it just like a cake. Was a little too much for me but I did like that it was very smooth and had no after taste.

Cherry comes through great. Throw some whipped cream on this and it'd be like drinking an actual black forest cake (or.... Vanilla ice cream for a beer float? Now there's an idea. Death by sugar coma doesn't sound that terrible)

Got the Black Forest cake profile. I mean I guess I missed pieces of cherries... but I loved this. Looking forward to sharing the next one with someone to talk about it. The chocolate hung back incredible well integrated with the base beer. And then the other flavors came out from that. The scents had me enjoying the temperature rise and coming back to smell instead of drinking.

The smell is on point. Sweet, sugary, pastry. The taste is disappointing after smelling it. Cherry purée is there but not too much. Hubbard’s Cave tends to have off aftertastes with their stouts.

Notes of chocolate and cherry dance well together. Loads of milk sugar make for a creamy finish and after taste. Collabs rock!

Look: Dark brown almost black, with a small 1/4 finger sized tan head that dissipated and left a small ring of foam. Smell: Big milk chocolate, sweet vanilla, and a little cherry. Taste: Sweet chocolate cake up front, followed by cocoa, small and underlying cherry that lingers with some vanilla. As it warmed we got more cherry, but it was more Chocolate cake with some cherry, followed by vanilla and lingering sweet cherry. Hints of booze in the nose at the end. No hop character at all. Feel: Full body, almost syrupy, little carbonation. Somewhat drying, leaving you wanting more. The lactose really added to the smooth feel and it sits well with the light carbonation on your tongue. What can you say about Hubbards Cave brews? Super creative dark stuff, which keeps us coming back to try more of their stuff. We live in the Portland OR area and get HC from Tavour in Seattle, but it is always worth it. They do dark beer well and they nailed the Black Forest Cake idea they had with this one. Definitely a dessert beer. Cheers everyone!

Great Black Forest flavor. Getting chocolate with a little bit of cherry. Odd aftertaste. Only reason my rating isn’t higher. EDIT: Wow, that aftertaste is unpleasant. Lowered my rating a point.

Another hit from Untitled Art and Hubbard's Cave! This is a strongly fudge forward stout with the cherry blending very well.

Someone finally figured out how to extract cake and make it liquid. Something you need to be in the right mood for - cherry and chocolate come across strong, quite sweet. Delicious.
