A Note on This Beer

The latest release of Darkest Hour just dropped, and it sold out on Anchorage’s website almost immediately!

Take my word for it, you need to either snatch up a bottle now, or keep reading at your own risk — this incredible 13% ABV Imperial Stout is gonna move like a PS5 in December.

What makes this such a revered bottle for beer aficionados? Every year, the folks at Anchorage do something a little special, and a little different, to their new vintage of Darkest Hour. They go all-in until it’s a once-in-a-lifetime drinking experience for those lucky enough to get their hands on it. The Manual even named the 2019 version one the Best Barrel-Aged Beers to Drink!

And this year, Anchorage has done it again — and then some.

First, they brewed it with Alder smoked malts to intensify the roasted, campfire notes. Then, they aged it in Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Bourbon barrels for over a year. The result is a smoky, toasty Imperial Stout that still embodies the rich characteristics of the barrel it spent so long in: caramel, light vanilla, and even a touch of dark fruit.

Every new batch of Darkest Hour is carefully crafted, painstakingly refined, and highly anticipated — now, finally, we are appeased. At least for this year.

Hopefully you already added some to your crate and you’re just coming back to read this. If so, congratulations! Take good care of that precious stash!

Lucky Tavour members will be the first to tell you — every Darkest Hour release we’ve carried surpassed a 4.30 rating!

Enjoyed the chocolate base with a little smokiness from the malt. Got a little kick from the barrel but not as much as I had hoped for. Solid brew all around though.

Thick, syrupy, caramel stout. It’s really a special stout — not for any regular Friday night. This is that snuggled up by a camp fire, stare at the stars, and sip your cares away kind of stout. Man this stuff is good. Bummed I only popped for 1 bottle. It’s definitely for special occasions. It’s such a complex and caramelly stout, I’d drizzle this stuff on my Cheerios!

I’m not a fan of smokey beer, but this one was decent, due to the fact that it was not all smoke and no flavor.

Delicious. Another no brainer buy from anchorage. Smokey. Not as sweet as some of the others. Puts hair on your chest.

Happy to have tried and well-executed with their tasting notes, just not up my alley. Very roasty (almost peaty), bitter chocolate, dark fruit.

I expected more smoke out of this one, but was pleasantly surprised at the subtlety of smoke. Decent overall, but they've made better stouts.

Excellent example of bourbon barrel aged stout. Roasted malts make a great combination with the bourbon.
