A Note on This Beer
Fall is upon us, and I am falling head over heels for today’s Day of the Dead Vienna Lager!
Not just because it’s crafted by the Seattle superstars at Reuben’s Brews, though I am a total sucker for anything these guys make — they’ve won over 237 medals and awards in just 7 years for goodness sake!
But it’s also because Day of the Dead’s amber-hued liquid flows as crisp as the autumnal air that I’m getting the good-feelin’ goosebumps! Every time I get a whiff of those bready malts and spicy Noble Hops, I swoon like a lovesick loon thinking about the refreshing flavors in store.
And before you go gettin’ yourself all in a kerfuffle over my seasonal Lager love affair, I’ll have you know that, historically speaking, ALL Lagers are fall and winter beers!
Way back in the day, the colder months would’ve been the only time you could keep a fermenting brew cool enough to make a proper Lager. So in 1533, Germany actually passed a law that made it illegal to brew the style in the summer at all!
Really, it’s just the natural way of things to drink Lagers in fall! And when that crisp and easy-drinking delight is crafted by the team that took 2nd place overall at the 2019 US Open Beer Championships, it’s just a no-brainer.
So, stock up on this Day of the Dead like it’s your stash of Halloween candy. Matter of fact, hand some cans out to your friends who have a sweet spot for flavors of toasted, crumbly bread and caramel drizzle, and they’ll start showing up at your place like it’s Halloween every day.
It’s the way the Germans would have wanted it, I’m sure.
