A Note on This Beer
I love Schwarzbier! This traditional Black Lager style has all the flavorful roastiness and dark chocolate nuances of a Stout, wrapped in a lighter, supremely sippable body.
But, good luck finding one in the U.S.! You’re more likely to see them if you’re driving on the autobahn.
Luckily, we’ve managed to snag a few cases of Elder Pine’s oak foeder aged Black Lager, Empyreal Radiance, so you can come over to the Dark Side and raise a toast to their two year anniversary.
I know what you’re thinking. “Oak foeder aged, you say? Don’t most breweries use foeders for Sour Ales?”
You’re right to think so! But, Elder Pine’s brand new, temperature-controlled foeder was laced with the inviting flavors of freshly baked sugar cookies — ideal for a dark beer.
Before the foeder’s maiden voyage, the brewers soaked it in bourbon for 7 days for another layer of caramelly nuance. Then, they aged Empyreal Radiance in it for six months.
Each smooth, medium-bodied sip evokes oaky vanilla, roasted malt, and dark chocolate covered caramels. Chocolate dipped espresso beans and dark dried fruit notes rise to the top as it warms. Due to its time spent aging at a low lagering temperature, it’s got a mouthfeel that’s softer than chocolate mousse.
The lucky few who’ve tried Empyreal Radiance are calling it “beautifully done,” and “smoky toasty like a smooth campfire. Delicious.”
But, Elder Pine’s sophisticated Lagers don’t leave Maryland or D.C. So, if you’re ready to convert to the Dark Side, grab a few cans, and may the force be with you.
