A Note on This Beer
According to the Norse specialists at SonsOfVikings.com, beer was likely the most plentiful drink in the Viking world. In the wintertime, Vikings particularly enjoyed Dark Farmhouse Ales for warmth and sustenance.
So, when the brewers at Little Beast wanted some cozy goodness of their own in cold, rainy Portland, Oregon, they brewed today’s Folkvangr Dark Farmhouse Ale!
To really capture the comfort, they started with a robust, dark grain bill of chocolate wheat and kilned coffee malts. Then, in true Nordic style, they fermented the complex sipper with Norwegian kveik yeast, which wraps the brew in bright fruit and rustic farmhouse notes. They also hopped it with Callista and Hallertau Blanc for subtle hints of lemongrass and florals, like hopeful whispers of spring on a wintery day.
The result is a Dark Saison-style Farmhouse Ale that is hearty and bold, brimming with flavors of dried fruit and mocha, and punctuated with just a little earthy funk and tartness.
The Vikings knew a few things about getting through a long, dark winter. Now the crew at Little Beast has revived a bit of that ancient wisdom to help us all deal with the dark days. Heck, with a few bottles of this stuff in the fridge, you might find yourself wishing that winter would last just a little longer.
*Wondering what “Folkvangr” means? It’s an ethereal meadow ruled over by the Goddess Freyja. Norse mythology is neat!
