A Note on This Beer

Today’s lesson: why the Wheatwine blows the Barleywine out of the water when it comes to pastry time.

A Wheatwine is like a Barleywine except lighter in color and body, less aggressively hopped, and thus less bitter. AND THUS, it’s a wonderful playground for the Dark Beer barons at Mikkeller and Horus to transform into the dessert beer dreams are made of!

Their Friends of Prey Pastry Wheatwine is ridiculously delicious. To make it, the breweries teamed up and added cocoa nibs, vanilla, peanut butter powder, and coffee.

I can only imagine the tears Starbucks die-hards would weep if they got to try it. But, at this point, only the brewers got a taste. Then, they decided they needed to crank it up to never-before-charted-levels of complex indulgence.

So, they aged this 17.2% ABV dessertopia in Bourbon, Brandy, and Mead barrels!

Watching a sweet-toothed beer geek sip Friends of Prey is like seeing the wide-eyed grin of a toddler who just took their first taste of an ice cream sundae with all the toppings.

*Food & Wine named the 2X Danish Brewery of the Year crew at Mikkeller, one of the Most Important Breweries from Europe.

*Horus is ranked in the Top 25 Breweries in the World on Untappd.

This is a really interesting, cocoa forward, pastry wheat wine. It has a smooth caramelly body that is not thick but is also far from thin and a tasty, but one note, rich chocolate flavor with hints of sweet barrel character and peanut powder to it.

First time trying a “wheatwine” beer. This contains cocoa nibs. The cocoa aroma and taste is pretty pronounced for me. Has PB powder which comes through. Label says ABV is 17.2, very drinkable.

Forgot this was a Wheatwine for second cause the cocoa just hit me like it was a stout. Interesting and great result

Was my least favorite of my pack. Apparently barrel aged doesn’t do it for me

Imagine putting this much effort into a beer just to have it taste like an average barrel aged coffee stout.

What more can I say. Exactly what you would expect. This beer comes with a high ABV and a high price tag. It tastes like a well aged brew and worth every dollar. This beer doesn’t disappoint.

POUR EM IF YOU GOT EM! Tonight, from Horus aged ales in Oceanside, CA, it's "FRIENDS OF PREY"... this wheatwine runs 17.2% (read that shit again... because yes, this connoisseur is breaking his own personal record tonight with this booze bomb! ) and pours a rich mahogany hue. By now you may know that barley wine Is fairly high test. Wheat wine however, Is like barley wine, only its lighter In color and body and is less aggressively hopped and thus, less bitter. Notes of dark stone fruit abound, followed quickly by cocoa powder, peanut butter, leather and coffee bean. As dessert beers go, this one qualifies as a "dessertopia", meaning it's triple barrel aged in bourbon, brandy and mead barrels and believe me, this monster is throwing some serious smoke! Powerful and decadent! A new reigning ABV champion! 😃🍻👍 💎💎💎💎💍
