A Note on This Beer

16.3% ABV?! Dear lord, Hoppin’ Frog!

Then again, these 5x GABF award-winning Dark Beer masters loaded today’s Gavel Slammer to such dizzying heights for good reason.

First made in 2016, this once-a-year release commemorates craft breweries’ victory over Ohio’s ABV limit laws. In other words, this is an outrageously boozy middle finger to the state’s draconian limits on our beer!

The result is a pour that shows why Paste Mag calls Hoppin’ Frog one of Ohio’s Must Try Breweries for beers that are “big, boozy and spare no expense.”

And absolutely nothing was spared in the making of Gavel Slammer — not the ABV, not the flavors, and definitely not any of these UT-fans’ soberness:

  • “Smooth, figgy, and sweet — like Firestone’s Parabola but thicker.” @Michael P.
  • “Whoa! Big boozy, whiskey bomb! Love it. Hoppin’ Frog kills BBA and high ABV beers.” @Gary R.
  • “Shut up liver, you're fine.” @Bob L.

Grab an extra bottle for your cellar and your patience will be rewarded with even smoother flavors of baker’s black cocoa mellowing the intensity of whiskey-drenched Godiva brownies. Yet, for the fans who can’t wait for this behemoth to mellow, that’s ok, too.

Gavel Slammer is ready for celebration now. Will you feel the booze? Shoot, you’ll probably get tipsy from just a whiff of its cherry liqueur aromas!

You can’t say we didn’t warn you.

22oz bottle from Tavour, cellared. Dark brown pour, ruby hues around the edges, small bubbly tan head. Aroma is ashy, prunes, brown sugar and a healthy dose of booze. Taste brings the ABV with an in-your-face kick Once you get past the burn, there are some wonderfully smoky, malty flavors there. Sip and enjoy!
