A Note on This Beer

Fun fact: German Chocolate Cake isn’t even German.

It was actually developed in the US, instead getting its name from English-American chocolate maker Samuel German who invented the rich, dark baking chocolate used in the recipe.

But maybe, just maybe, it can be American AND German...

To create today’s succulent German Chocolate Cake Lager, the craft legends of Virginia at Lickinghole Creek combined the flavors of that beloved, American-made cake with time-honored German innovation. It’s a delightfully sweet and totally quaffable meeting of two worlds!

The brewers began with a traditional German-style Doppelbock base, brewed with German specialty grains and fermented for several weeks. After which, they conditioned the beer over additions of cocoa nibs, toasted coconut, nutty pecans, and sweet vanilla for those signature cakey flavors.

This rich and ravishing Lager is a luscious sipper, indeed. It drinks clean and smooth, with a light, bready malt backbone supporting the mouth-watering tastes of melty chocolate and creamy coconut. Sprinkles of candied pecan and whipped cream appear on the finish, helping mask the impressive 8% ABV.

As far as quenchable flavor bombs go, this one’s probably better than the real deal. Which leaves us with another fun fact: today, you’ve got a chance to have your cake and drink it, too!

A bit disappointing. Nice and chocolaty but otherwise kind of thin.

By the name you would think this would be a sweet mess, but just the opposite. This light bodied lager has hints of chocolate and a mild nuttiness that makes this a great beer this time of year.

Amazing yet subtle aromas a flavors. The chocolate and coconut are balanced and pair wonderfully with the sweetness of the lager yet surprisingly does not overwhelm it. I really hope I get a chance to drink this again.

This is so good! I love dark lagers and this delivers. It’s got a perfect mix of cocoa, vanilla, coconut, and pecans. It really does taste like German Chocolate Cake. Delicious!!

A little light/watery for Dobblebock for me. Good flavor, but not as heavy as I would prefer.

Coconut in beer has never been a favorite of mine, however, if you're a fan of German chocolate this beer is a knockout. It's intense and dark, not heavy like your standard DoppleBock, but packs flavour like a mule. In summary, You get a good Balance of Vanilla, Chocolate, Coconut and pecans. If you go into it expecting Vanilla and Coconut forward with a lingering creaminess of Cacao and pecan, it doesn't dissapoint.

The flavor was just off. I prefer stouts so I think I was expecting more chocolate flavors comparative to a stout. It is a very crisp refreshing beer.
