A Note on This Beer

It’s really beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

We’ve snagged a St. Nick-sized pack full of expertly-crafted brews just for you Tavour elves — from the 3x Gold Medal World Beer Cup award-winning brewers at Firestone Walker, no less.

Paste Magazine named Firestone Walker the #1 American Brewery of the 2010s last year!

If you choose to put this one-of-a-kind bundle under your favorite craft brew-sipper’s tree, you’ll probably shock them into next year. That is, if you don’t save each and every delectable drop for yourself to savor on Christmas!

Here’s what you have to look forward to:

2x Sucaba (2018) - 12.5% ABV

When Firestone Walker first released their prized Sucaba 2018 Vintage, they said it “is built to last and can age for years to come.”

Here’s your chance to taste for yourself how two years of careful cellaring has intensified this English-style Barleywine’s complex, dark chocolate malt flavors and boozy, bourbon-oak aromas.

Or, let it slumber a while longer and wait for deeper cherry notes and sweet vanilla undertones to reveal themselves further as the yeti-sized ABV mellows out!

This is the beer that’s ranked #3 in its style on BeerAdvocate. That’s not in the nation — that’s in the entire world!

Rated a perfect 100/100 score on BeerAdvocate; 4.29 on Untappd

1x XXIII Anniversary Ale - 11.5% ABV

The next time the brewers at Firestone Walker celebrate an anniversary, catch me ridin’ the next sleigh in. I heard through the mistletoe that last year’s 23rd Anniversary extravaganza was out-of-this-world fun.

Throngs of brew-connoisseurs flocked to the Paso Robles taproom to indulge in a selection of sought-after, barrel-aged brews!

But, the real shining star was a blend the brewery released that very day — XXIII Anniversary Ale: a luxuriously rich, decadent blend of six distinct component ales blended with the help of local winemakers.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • 28% Stickee Monkee — a sweet and malty Central Coast Quad* brewed with Mexican Turbinado sugar.
  • 28% Parabola and 5% Velvet Merkin — two bold, espresso-laden Stouts.
  • 20% Bravo — an earthy and resinous Brown Ale.
  • 15% Helldorado Bourbon Barrel and 4% Tequila Barrel — Blond Barleywines with notes of vanilla and raisins.

The result? A one-of-a-kind American Strong Ale churning with remarkable complexity and toffee-caramel decadence!

Rated 93/100 on Beer Advocate; 4.32 on Untappd

2x Gin Rickey (2020) - 11.3% ABV

Ever heard of a Gin Rickey cocktail? If not, take those ear-muffs off and listen closely.

Gin Rickeys were hugely popular during Prohibition because, well, they were incredibly refreshing and delicious! Even THE F. Scott Fitzgerald loved the iconic flavors of lime and juniper swimming in its translucent pour.

The Firestone brewers let this Blonde Barleywine mature in Gin Barrels for 18 months with additions of freshly zested lime peel, mace, coriander, and juniper berries. It bellows with all the same zesty flavor of the iconic cocktail, so it’s worthy of a Great Gatsby-level soirée.

It’s truly a barrel-aged delicacy, made by barrel-aging experts, for barrel-aged brew lovers.

Rated 4.18 Untappd

It’s smooth and I really enjoy this barley wine. I miss living in walking distance of FWB in Venice.

My experience is gin aging is really hard to do well, and they nailed this. Adjuncts work very well with relatively subtle gin notes, and it's just as dry as it needs to be. Surprisingly drinkable. Stoked there is a second bottle.

I can understand why some might not like this beer - it’s pretty unique. However I love the mix of the caramelly barleywine combined with the herbally juniper gin flavour. Delicious!
