A Note on This Beer

I love the sounds of Christmas morning! The excited giggling, the tearing of wrapping paper, the popping of a bottle of delicious barrel-aged beer.

What, you don’t celebrate Christmas morning with festive craft beers? Well, today’s holiday 6-pack from Hardywood Park Craft Brewery might just be the start of your new Noel tradition.

All of these beers trace their roots to the now legendary Gingerbread Stout — easily one of the most sought-after holiday beers in the country. Food & Wine even credits it with putting this Virginia brew crew on the map, saying, “the first taste of this unique beer was a revelatory experience!”

Today, you can take things to the next level with a whole line up of gingerbread-inspired Dark Beers. Here’s what you get:

1x 750 ml bottle of Bourbon Barrel Aged Gingerbread Stout - 11.5% ABV

To make this hyper-limited barrel-aged version, the brewers first craft a batch of their celebrated Stout with ginger, cinnamon, vanilla, and creamy lactose. Then, they let it mellow into whiskey-kissed bliss in a combination of Heaven Hill and A. Smith Bowman Bourbon Barrels.

Every sip is like a gift wrapped in rich, dark chocolate and spicy ginger, and it lands on the taste buds smoother than Santa’s sleigh on a frosty Christmas eve.

The only thing keeping it from being the ideal winter morning beverage is the lack of coffee, but the next beer has that covered.

2x 16oz cans of Christmas Morning Imperial Milk Stout - 9.2%

This decadent sip takes all the deliciousness of Hardywood’s original ginger, cinnamon, honey, and vanilla-infused Gingerbread Stout, and adds a rich backbone of locally roasted Mexican coffee beans. If there’s an espresso stand in Santa’s workshop, I’m guessing the drinks they serve taste just like this.

It’s like breaking off a corner of an actual gingerbread house and dunking it into a fresh cup of coffee. YUM.

1x 750 ml bottle of Kentucky Christmas Morning - 11.5% ABV

For those who prefer their coffee spiked, you’ll want to crack open this Bourbon-soaked version of Christmas Morning. This brew has all the rich, roasty flavor of the original, wrapped up in a ribbon of whiskey-caramel that elevates it from a delightful winter treat, to a truly world-class indulgence.

It’s even one of the Top 10 Milk Stouts on Earth, according to BeerAdvocate!

2x 16 oz cans of Gingerbread Porter - 9.2% ABV

Finally, we have an Imperial Porter laced with cinnamon, vanilla, locally-grown ginger, and local wildflower honey. It brings a slightly lighter body than its Stout companions, but has all the same amazing gingerbread flavor. It’s also lactose free, so you can split one with a non-dairy Dark Beer fan while you watch the kids go absolutely bonkers tearing open that new Lego set.

If this platter of boozy Christmas cookies doesn’t inspire you to pop open a brew while you unwrap presents this year, I don’t know what will!

Look: dark (almost black) with a finger brown head that dissipates almost immediately into a fine lace. No trail lacing as we drank it. Smell a bit Baltic in notes with some gingerbread and honey. Taste: front end sweet, roast and Baltic notes. Mid we get heavy gingerbread, honey in the nose with some trailing vanilla. I don’t get cinnamon, Bren gets some cinnamon (what she calls a higher note) on the backend, but I’m kinda like eh... Feel: definitely a porter and not a stout. The carbonation sticks around as it warmed and had a decent mellow vanilla (even and trailing) mouthfeel as it goes down.

Simply supurb. Let this one warm to about 50, 55 degrees and sip slowly. Ginger on the nose and really coming through with aftertaste. Just the right amount of cinnamon. These guys nailed it!

Like eating a gingerbread cookie! Very nice dessert beer. Just enough ABV to keep it interesting. Much better than expected!

Decent, but slightly underwhelming. I expected a bit richer of a flavor for as high abv that it is

God darn it. It should not take 10 mins to open a bottle of beer with a ridiculous WAX seal. Changing my 4 star rating to 2 stars because of this real inconvenience. You suck. Fix this with a pull tab release or STOP IT with the cement wax everywhere. I’m right. Do not dispute me.
