A Note on This Beer
If you want to visit the taproom at Varietal Beer Company, all you have to do is fly to Seattle, rent a car, drive 3 hours over the Cascade Mountains and down through the hopfields of the Yakima Valley, to the little town of Sunnyside.
It’s a beautiful drive, and the industrial taproom, with its sprawling beer garden and delicious brews, is totally worth the trip. But let’s face it, you’re probably not going anytime soon.
We’d actually recommend waiting until spring when things start to warm up — that part of the state gets mighty chilly — but by then, today’s Grievous Angel Barrel Aged Stout will be long gone!
Fortunately, you don’t have to miss out on its whiskey-drenched deliciousness from a full 18 months of aging in a blend of Woodford Reserve Rye AND Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Bourbon Barrels!
After a year and a half of patiently waiting, the Washington Beer Awards Gold Medalists at Varietal blended the brews together to get just the right ratio of spicy rye and caramelly bourbon. Every sip soaks the tastebuds with notes of bakers chocolate, fresh roasted coffee, and oaky vanilla, with just a touch of char and peppery spice on the finish. And since the base beer is a blend of Oatmeal Stout and Milk Stout, it drinks creamy-smooth from a touch of lactose.
Grab a can or two from our little stash of less than 30 cases, and you might find yourself inspired to actually plan a trip out to Varietal.
June is a great month for it, just FYI.
