A Note on This Beer

I love traditional Belgian brews. Love ‘em! But they’re always missing one of my all-time favorite things: massive quantities of ultra-juicy American hops.

Not anymore! The brewers at Oregon’s Monkless Belgian Ales are finally combining two of my most beloved beer styles with Hazy Day in Brussels! At first glance, you might think this sunbeam-hued pour is a New England-style juicebomb, but you’d only be half right.

Hazy Day starts as a traditional Tripel-Style Ale, brewed with classic Belgian malts and yeast to make for a crushably smooth body. Then, the brewery emboldens this beauty with a double dry-hopping of Citra, El Dorado, and Mandarina Bavaria Hops!

The hops bring bright layers of tangerine and a crisp, dry, piney finish — nicely refreshing on a warm day!

This probably isn’t the first hazy beer you’ve tried. Heck, if you’re anything like me, it might not even be the first Hazy you’ve enjoyed TODAY. But it’s almost certainly the first time you’ve had the chance to sample a Hazy Belgian Tripel with American hops!

Monkless is the 2020 GABF Mid-Size Brewpub of the Year!!

Monkless is now on my default list of beers to grab after trying this brew. Faithful to what it says on the can.

Complex beer, I think this hazy DDH version of the tripel has a lot going on. Smooth tripel with a pungent pop. Overall descent beer.

Has a bit of a bite but it fades quickly and enjoyably.

Grassy malts, some dry cidery apple, little bit of tropical fruit, maybe some grape. Pretty decent, enjoyable ale. Actually tastes fairly authentic to the Belgian style, but with some clearly American influence. Drinks slow, but smooth. Worth a try, interesting hybrid that mostly succeeds at what it's trying to do.

An interesting Belgian ale with strong hints of lemon and a citrus bitterness. I was not sure ht the double dry hopping would add, but it remained a true to its Belgian roots.

Disappointed with this beer. I was stoked for the concept, but the mix of dry hopping and tripel ends with with what I feel like is a medicore execution of both. I'm getting very little of the phenols/esters that make a tripel a tripel, and the dry hopping has good aroma but isn't doing much on the fruit front for me. And there is a bitterness that's fighting the belgian flavors. I was hoping for an american take on houblon chouffe, but this was not it. Not sure if filtering out the hop sediment impacted the flavor or if it was just the dry hoping bill, or something else. Still drinkable, just not what I was hoping for.

A hazy Belgian. I dig and hope to see this type of blend more in the future

I now just buy everything I see from Monkless, but I was a little concerned this was dry.hopped. A hazy tripel... absolute madness! This beer is FANTASTIC. This is a whole different class of hazy.

I had a great first impression with Monkless, so I was thrilled for this one.. Not my favorite. Intense boozy flavor, couldn't taste anything else.

Pours and smells like a NEIPA with haze and dank fruit. Taste, however, is wild mash-up of pureed tropical fruit, pine resin and Belgian triple yeasty spiciness. Fabulously different!

Just as advertised: seriously hopped Tripel. Didn’t know I needed this in my life until I had it!

The dry hop overpowers the usual unique Belgian notes, which is unfortunate because I appreciate that Monkless tried something different. Still, carries the Tripel weight and warmth though.

Solid enough base beer, but not quite expansive. The dry hopping is a nice touch, but doesn’t add back all of the panache that is missing from a really spot on ester and phenol profile. Could be slightly more filling in the mouth as well, and perhaps a touch drier. But I’d drink it again.
