A Note on This Beer

Texas-based Rahr & Sons Brewing Company gives a proud nod to Scotland with their GABF award-winning Iron Thistle Scotch Ale. This 7% ABV malty roasted chestnut is a crisp, dry ale that’s one of BeerAdvocate’sTop 100 Scotch Ales.

A smooth, drinkable, boozy balance of caramel malts and bitter hops, this critically acclaimed beer has won the hearts of dark beer fans in the Lone Star State and beyond. Iron Thistle has racked up the awards: World Beer Championship 2012, US Open Beer Championship in Atlanta, and San Diego International Beer Competition 2015. (And those are just the Golds!)

Named after the thistle flower, the national emblem of Scotland, this beer pours a rich mahogany hue, releasing a sweet maple aroma. At first sip, a wave of deeply roasted nuts and molasses rolls over the palate, followed by a Darjeeling tea and char finish. In other words, this is a beer that moves—every sip delivering a shifting cocktail of complementary flavors.

Rahr & Sons recommends drinking this beer with some aged gouda and perfectly roasted vegetables, but Iron Thistle is just as satisfyingly complex and smooth on its own.
