A Note on This Beer

Today’s Kveik Thai Tom Kha has got to be one of the most unique beers to ever win GABF Gold. To create it, the crew at Utah’s Shades of Pale (a.k.a. Shades Brewing) drew inspiration from Tom Kha Soup — a sweet and spicy, coconut-based Thai staple!

To emulate those exotic flavors, the brewers reached for the same ingredients used by cooks across Southeast Asia. Creamy coconut, tangy kaffir lime leaves, earthy lemongrass, and galangal — a type of sweet and citrusy ginger. A touch of lactose gives it a slightly creamy finish.

Open the can, and it smells like morning at a spice market in Chang Mai. Take a sip, and the Golden Sour Ale base (brewed with super-fruity Kveik Yeast) seems to reflect and amplify all those tangy-spicy flavors.

As one taster put it, “Coconut, lemongrass, and kaffir leaf are things I never knew I wanted in a Sour, but this is amazing!”

This is our very first beer from Shades, and what an introduction! Not only is this Gold Medal-winner incredibly unique, it’s also mighty tough to find outside of Utah — almost everything this brewery makes is snatched up by thirsty craft fans before it crosses state lines.

So, if you’re looking for a departure from the usual beer flavors, here’s a brew that will take your tastebuds on an exotic adventure. It blew away the GABF judges, now it’s your turn.

Rated 4.25 on Untappd!

Just not for us. Unique for sure. The smell turned us off and then the taste was just too all over the place.

It did taste like cold Thai soup, without the savory aspects. It was okay, but would not get again.

The coconut flavor is so strong it’s almost like drinking coconut water... but I really don’t mind. It’s sweet but not to sweet. Balanced yet strong. Anyone who loves coconut should love this beer. I could polish off a few on a hot summer day easily.

Not my usual bag whatsoever, but was an incredibly interesting flavor. Probably wouldn’t order it at a bar if I saw it again but definitely glad I gave it a try. Could be pretty insane if paired with the right dish, too

“WTF.....I gotta try this.” Did not disappoint. I would easily grab another 6pack if it shows up again. Everything gels well in this blend with coconut being the dominant flavor. The galangal and lemongrass hit next and at the end you are like....oh yea...it kinda is a sour.

Hazy , unknown nose, fantastic sweet coconut flavor with a sour edge, prickly yet not much carbonation, odd yet good.

This is a damn unique brew, and its variety of uniqueness is right in my wheelhouse. The coconut and lactose provide a smooth, sweet softness, while the botanicals give a lovely sharpness to the sour. Very, very delicious.

Tasty sour. Lemongrass really comes through along with the coconut milk.

This is honestly awesome it’s a sour with all described and I don’t like coconut normally but this is just a hint with a sour taste that cuts thru the sweetness of the coconut and has a really unique profile would be excellent with a good curry or Penang..... loved it can’t wait to drink this with my favorite sesame inn dish 😋

Incredible mix of coconut cream, lime and herbs. Not exactly reminiscent of the soup (a good thing). Very special brew

It was certainly interesting! I can’t say I would do more than one. But, if there was an evening with liked brews, well that might take up dinner! Hahah

Weird but in a good way. Not what I want when I want a beer but the mastery of ingredients to get this flavor combination is truly inspiring. I can’t wait to have one with a citrusy, spicy Thai dish. Maybe a good larb or something.
