A Note on This Beer

If you’re the more adventurous type of craft fan — one who isn’t afraid of drinking outside the box — then you absolutely need to try Le Seul Noir I from Une Année.

This Chicago-based crew turns Sour Ale brewing into an art form, crafting eye-catching sippers that mesmerize beer nerds’ palates. So much so that Forbes and PorchDrinking.com rightfully call them one of the Best Breweries in Illinois.

Le Seul Noir 1 is a perfect example of their creative expertise. The brewers made it by blending a mild, roasty Stout with a bright ‘n tangy Sour base. Then, they loaded the brew with piles of juicy-tart blackberries and sweet, velvety vanilla beans.

It’s like nothing I’ve tasted in a long time, though I wish I had tasted it sooner — this illicitly delicious Dark Sour is phenomenal!

With each sip, deep rivers of pressed blackberry juice flow over the palate, accompanied by an invigorating tartness. Then come the smooth, malty flavors of the Stout to coat the puckering berries in warm notes of sweet, melty milk chocolate. Imagine a Tootsie Roll with a piece of bursting fruit in the middle, and you’ll come close to this brew’s uniquely enticing profile.

But, if you want to get close enough to actually taste Le Seul Noir I, you’ll have to be quick. We have only 40 cases to go around!

Tavour strictly supports independent beer. Une Annee is certified independent by the Brewers Association

Had potential to be great but way too much vanilla, which overpowers the blackberry and the sour.

Not bad. Not great. The vanilla overpowers the sour. Not mad I tried it though.

Did not taste the vanilla :(. Very strong. Taste like a dark wine. Not very beer like. Was hard to drink. Had to go down very slow. Probably wouldn’t drink again.

This is like drinking a blackberry tart bathed in vanilla. It represents the description brilliantly. It’s got a ton of vanilla and a sour finish with the mouthfeel of a stout. It is heavier than expected and a welcomed surprise. Grateful for beers like this that keep you in the edge of your seat wondering what the brew wizards will come up with next.

This is good! Different, but so good. A hint of vanilla with a nice blackberry flavor and a hint of dried cherries. Yum!

This was hard to drink, couldn’t even finish it. The fermented taste is too strong and it had a weird aftertaste.

It drinks like something in between a sour and a stout... it isn’t sure what it wants to be, but it’s not bad

Like nothing I've tasted before, such bold flavor, then like a solid stout for smoothness. Fantastic!

Almost like a stout. Too much vanilla flavor. It had a weird aftertaste. It was rough to drink. Not feeling it but my boyfriend thought it was ok.

Deep, dark cherry flavor. It is rich and luscious, and felt stronger than the promised abv. I liked it.

An interesting beer. Blackberries were more of a cherry flavor and a hint of vanilla but there was something else going on that I couldn’t quite figure out. Somewhat earthy and funky. I enjoyed it, but not sure if I’d order it again

A good sour that tastes like a semi-dry/dry red wine more than a beer to me. The aftertaste is good and is truly like a vanilla bean.

Took a shot with this one but didn’t like it. Like a sour red wine mixed with chocolate. The aftertaste was odd and turned me off. Wouldn’t have this again.

Closest color to blood I’ve ever consumed in a beer. This is the alter ego of Hubbard’s Cave, and it didn’t disappoint. Dark enough to enjoy on a cool summer evening but fruity enough to enjoy on a summer afternoon. But the star of this show is the distinct taste of vanilla the brewers add to the process. Would pair really well with Breyer’s vanilla bean ice cream.
