A Note on This Beer

Few breweries are as dedicated to the art of Dark Beer as Fort George Brewery.

This crew is so serious about Stouts that they’ve designated the entire month of February to the style. Not only that, but they’re also responsible for one of the most anticipated annual beer fests in the Pacific Northwest: The Festival of Dark Arts.

For fans in-the-know, the event known as “the world’s darkest beer festival” is also the harbinger of Fort George’s biggest barrel-aged bottle release of the year: Matryoshka Russian Imperial Stout.

Today’s 2021 vintage of Matryoshka is extra special. The brewers aged it in a blend of Buffalo Trace Bourbon and Westward Whiskey barrels for a whole year. Then, they took it a step further with massive additions of sweet vanilla, cocoa nibs, warming cinnamon, and juicy red raspberries.

The luscious leviathan pours black as ink, jetting off aromas of rich baker’s chocolate and raspberry filling in all directions. With every sip, the thick and chewy mouthfeel carries flavors of artisanal raspberry chocolate truffles across the palate. A drizzle of vanilla icing and a sprinkle of cinnamon spice materialize midway through, before fading to notes of oaky bourbon and dark roast espresso in the base.

Normally, finding this coveted concoction of Stout mastery outside of Washington and Oregon is nearly impossible. But today, as a rare treat, you have the chance to make Matryoshka your own.

Tavour strictly supports independent beer. Fort George Brewery is certified independent by the Brewers Association

Tastes like a raspberry truffle. Once it warms, the vanilla and whiskey barrel come to the front. But kinda odd, I got 2 bottles and the second tasted totally different, more like an umami brown ale with no barrel character, rating is for the first which was awesome

Chocolate covered raspberries soaked in bourbon and dusted with cinnamon powder. Best way I could describe it. Would probably be wonderful fireside on a deep winter night.

Raspberry up front that never quite let's go. Some vanilla and spiciness at the end but nothing of note

Rainbow of flavors: bourbon hits hard up front, followed by chocolate, then sweet raspberry that almost comes through as cherry, followed by vanilla, coffee and oak. Lingering flavor like chocolate covered cherries sticks forever. Great combination.

Chocolaty stout with tart raspberry aftertaste. Vanilla rounds it out smoothly. Can’t quite catch the cinnamon tho. Not complaining

Great aroma reminiscent of a raspberry pie using dark brown sugar. The flavors are amazingly layered (appropriately named, indeed). Sweet and slightly tart raspberries heighten and lift the traditionally heavy aspects of a stout. The bitterness gets close to the Russian Imperial Stout apex of almost being salty like a soy sauce, but the cinnamon gives it an almost sulfur aspect coupled with the sweetness of the raspberries making it taste like pomegranate molasses. Lots of heavy brewed flavors here, but fantastically done. The finish is intensely vanilla on all aspects, but very enjoyable. Just an astounding beer all around.

It’s...weird. I don’t hate it but I don’t like it either. Doesn’t taste like a stout at all. Really only get what tastes like white chocolate raspberries.

UNBELIEVABLE! SO SOOOOOOOO GOOD. it was exactly how I wanted this to be (very solid rich stout with a very natural raspberry taste) and I will buy anything this brewery puts up on Tavour

Warms you up from the inside. Raspberry-forward, with strong hints of bourbon first, then vanilla, and finally mellowing out into a mouth-coating chocolate aftertaste. That’ll do, pig!

Nose is absolutely glorious, jammy fruit mixed with velvety chocolate and charred oak. It coats the mouth and lingers with the barrel flavors, leaving a touch of heat that warms as it goes down. Totally amazing.

5th and final beer of the series. I was skeptical of the raspberry and it is a bit heavy-handed, but it balances out the excessive cinnamon in the prior iteration and is a welcome improvement. Reminiscent of chocolate-covered raspberries.

Incredibly disappointed. Way too thin for a BBA, and the raspberry overpowers everything else.

Wanted more cinnamon, but also had it for a year so can’t tell if it was lost in age. very good sweet stout. Lot of raspberry taste
