A Note on This Beer
I just learned that a passionfruit is — technically speaking — a berry. And a blackberry, which has ‘berry’ right there in the name, isn’t! Apparently it’s an ‘aggregate fruit,’ whatever that means.
I’m still reeling from the shock of it all.
Fortunately, I have just the thing to soothe my tattered nerves while I contemplate this berry debacle. It’s called Monument from Crane Brewing, and it’s packed with epic quantities of real passionfruit AND blackberry!
Or, should I say ‘passionberry’ and ‘black aggregate fruit?’ Because according to Wikipedia, that’s what we’re dealing with here.
And that’s okay. Because ever since this tart and fruity tropical smoothie first hit my lips, the particulars of fruit classification seem a lot less important. After all, I am not a fruit scientist. I am a beer lover, just like you.
And this particular beer has a whole lot to love! The balance between sweet and tart is spot on, with just enough pucker to make the berry and passionfruit notes really shine. A touch of lactose in the brew makes for a creamy finish.
Imagine a scoop of homemade sorbet melting across your tastebuds, and you’ll have a good idea of what this brew tastes like!
Leave it to Crane to recreate those refreshing flavors in a 6% ABV Berliner Weiss. Even Forbes and Wine Magazine have called out their exemplary Sour skills!
Whether you think it’s a passion-berry Berliner or an aggregate fruit Sour, once you get a taste of Monument, the only thing you’ll call it is ‘delicious!’
This beer is too new for ratings!
