A Note on This Beer

When the Dukes of Dark Beer at Adroit Theory release a new rendition of their Negation Russian Imperial Stout, I can’t just sit around and twiddle my thumbs. I HAVE to have it!

The Virginia brewers are renowned for pushing the limits of how bold beer can be, and for having releases sell-out via pre-sales before they’re even finished brewing.

And, let me tell you, Negation (Ghost 933) is so bold and craveworthy, I’m shocked we managed to get any!

With every motor oil-thick sip, formidable flavors of dark chocolate energized by splashes of blonde-roast coffee notes dominate the taste buds. Meanwhile, a boozy heat warms between subtle rucks of smooth caramel that punctuate the chewy pour. Allow the brew to rest a while, and the booziness diminishes as the caramel notes grow stronger.

The complexity of this 12% ABV colossus is impressive, to say the least. The lucky few Virginians who’ve tasted it rave that Negation is “Probably the best Stout I've ever had that didn't have a lot added to it.” Or, in other words, it’s “The kind of stout that keeps you coming back for more.”

Coming back for more won’t be an option unless you load up on plenty of Negation today. Adroit’s heavy-hitters like this one tend to disappear faster than shadows in darkness.

With Tavour, it's easy to beer it forward! Just head over to Tavour.com/gifts to send a gift box or gift card to the craft beer lover in your life. Cheers!

This one was a challenge to finish, but like a rich, decadent dessert, it was a challenge gladly accepted. One of the most intense stouts I’ve ever had, and I loved every sip. Pain and pleasure — indivisible.

Really strong coffee initially. Becomes more balanced as it warms and the chocolate and molasses comes through. Smokey and bitter on the back end. Not the best Adroit Russian I have had.

Doc, this beer is heavy. This beer could fortify me against a Russian winter. This is closer to bread than beer. I like a good stout, but I didn't realize beer could be closer to a solid than a liquid. I felt full after drinking half of it. This is the darkest beer I've ever drank.

Not a porter fan personally, but the 12% really was what made me try. Very heavy chocolate and coffee type flavor. But compared to what other people were saying, I didn’t find it overly heavy or too dark.

Very good imperial stout. It was a little too highly carbonated for an RIS in my opinion but the roast character and maltiness were delicious.

Hooked after the first sip! Nice big roasted malt flavor with noticeable notes of bitter dark chocolate mixed into black coffee. There's a very minute sweetness which I'm assuming is coming from the malt. And it's so damn SMOOTH I also had Día de los Muertos from Adroit in my crate but this one's just slightly that much better. The taste of this one is perfect for me. Guess that 1.7% ABV difference between them really does a lot!

This is close to perfection. Dark, thick, rich, creamy. How you can hide 12 ABV is a mystery.

This is an amazing stout with a lot going on. Robust, semi-bitter chocolate linger on palette with subtle coffee and caramel on the back burner. As others have pointed out, let this bad boy warm a bit but not too much.
