About This Beer

The Belgian beer experts at Taxman are all about how things taste — and if that means trading efficiency for flavor, they’re fine with that! Just look at today’s No Sparge Imperial Golden Belgian Strong Ale.

‘Sparging’ is the practice of sprinkling warm water on top of the grain as the brew kettle is drained in order to push the last of the wort out of the kettle and into the fermenters. Pretty much everyone does it, because it allows for the highest possible yield from the grain.

But it also dilutes the beer, so for this 12% ABV Strong Ale, the Taxman crew skipped it. That means they fermented only the most potent wort, so the beer sings with enormous flavors!

Tasting Notes

The beer sings with enormous flavors of fresh bread, toffee, and honey, from over 1.5 tons of Belgian Malt in the batch. On the finish, look for a hint of tartness from Taxman’s farmhouse yeast.

It’s all wrapped in a body so rich and smooth, you’re liable to forget all about that big 12% ABV!

Strong. It’s more of a barley wine than a golden. I was expecting something closer to Duvel per their other masterful Belgian style replicas. It’s got a bit of strong hop (classically American) and a bit of residual sugar in there but the sweetness isn’t too much. Rich is a good description

Delicious golden. Slot of fruit notes and general sweetness without being too cloying. Needed to let this one warm up to enjoy it the most.

Taster at brewery. Amber pour, flat. Aroma is sweet Malts and honey. Taste leads with honey notes, toffee, caramel. Smooth, hardly notice the ABV.

The alcohol is definitely present, but not in a bad way. Tastes more like a belgian than a blonde to me.

Lots of spice and heady booze on the nose. Big punch of boxy golden malty goodness with lots of toasted bread, figs, and just a little bit of funky yeast. Honestly, it’s really similar to 120 Minute IPA, but without the big, hoppy bitterness. Delicious.

Boozy! Nice tasting Golden Ale but definitely tastes like a Belgian. Reminds me of a boozy Banana Foster.

Liked it, was rich, but felt it was a tad over hopped. The bitterness took away from the unique malt aspects.

6/12/21 gorgeous! Tastes like honeyed orange wine. Sweet, but not cloying. Strong, yet drinkable. Can’t wait to taste the bourbon barrel version.

I really enjoyed this despite not being a big Belgian fan. It all just worked and I liked the slight banana/hopped up alcohol taste that was highlighted.

a little hoppy for what I was expecting. The barrel aging mixes nicely, but would have liked more spice like a true Belgian ale

this is always what I've imagined an imperial Golden ale would taste like. it's carnally, warm, but the alcohol is not overwhelming. there's a toffee thing going on there, and the combination of the carmelie and the mouth feel and the perfectly balanced hops make this one of my favorite beers certainly of the genre maybe ever.

Strong and intense. Sip starts out as fruity and little sweet, but then transforms into lots of maltyness and ends with a dry and boozy finish. Interesting beer.
