A Note on This Beer
A once-in-a-lifetime brew, Great Basin Brewing’s Orogenesis: Antler Flanders Sour Red Ale is the perfect conflux of barrels. Red wine and white wine barrels give it tangy cherry-like notes while special bourbon barrels apply a luxuriant dose of caramel.
In addition to the jamminess built over one year in wine barrels, Antler uses the bourbon barrels that previously housed another Tavour favorite - the legendary Scytale. These layers of barrel flavors power Antler to a top-of-class 4.1 rating on Untappd. Add in the tangy bite and you have a fruity tart showpiece with the flavors of a freshly-baked montmorency cherry pie.
Bronze with flickers of maroon illuminate the glass. Red grape skins graced with torched brown sugar aromas swirl above the brew. Rich chestnut woody notes abound from the extensive oak-aging. Sip away and you’ll savor layers of toffee-glazed cherries, set off by a spritzy lemon zest tartness. A tangy fruit banquet comes to a close with a dry yet semi-sweet cream sherry warmth.
Antler kicks off the Orogenesis series of beers from Great Basin that are made with such luxuriant ingredients, they will only be brewed once ever. Sour and Barrel-aged fans will be distraught when they discover they’ll only get to try this smooth-drinking, sophisticated and sultry brew once.
