A Note on This Beer
I’m not sure I’ve tasted a beer aged in white vermouth barrels before. If I have, then it was nowhere near as dazzling as today’s Oude Geuze collab from Mikkeller and Brouwerij Boon!
For this astonishingly refreshing Belgian-style beer, the brewers selected a blend of Lambics aged between 1 and 3 years in white vermouth oak foeders. Then, they bottle conditioned it to lock in layers of fruit and florals.
One sip, and I’m wishing more brewers dared to use white vermouth barrels in this manner. It’s lightly tart, with lemon sorbet-like flavors greeting you upfront. These give way to a delightful dance of vanilla and oak notes, leading to an elderflower finish.
I’m drinking mine as an afternoon refresher in the sun, but with all the revitalizing nature tones revealing themselves in this brew, I can taste why the brewers recommend Oude Geuze as an aperitif. My palate’s definitely open to whatever new flavors they can throw my way.
Mikkeller is easily one of the most recognized European breweries across the globe and snagged Danish Brewery of the Year their first year running. Brouwerij Boon’s Geuzes have meanwhile won multiple Gold Medals at the World Beer Awards!
