A Note on This Beer
They have a saying down in Oaxaca, Mexico: “For everything bad, there’s Mezcal. And for everything good, too.”
And friends, that is true. But Mezcal Barrel-Aged beers are incredibly hard to find because the barrels are usually reused to age spirits until they fall apart.
Luckily, the oak-aging aficionados at New Jersey's Alementary somehow managed to score a few top-shelf barrels so they could bring all those flavors to their Wheat Wine!
It’s called Return to Oaxaca, and the Best of Craft Beer Award-winning brewers made just 3 barrels of this brew. I only managed to score a couple hundred bottles for Tavour, and unless you’re headed to the Garden State, you’ll only find it here.
If you’re not familiar with Mezcal, the word refers to any distilled liquor made from Agave and produced in Mexico. Tequila is the most famous type, but there are many others.
The finest Mezcals, in my opinion, actually come from the Southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. There, artisan distillers roast their agave in underground ovens, imparting flavors of smoky mesquite that compliment the sweetly herbaceous flavors of the plant.
Take a sip of Return to Oaxaca, and let the lightly smoky flavors of sweet agave transport you to the sun-baked hills of Oaxaca. Nine months in the barrels lend the brew flavors of bright, herbaceous sweetness and oaky vanilla that elevate the fig and caramel profile of the base beer. Hints of smoky mesquite add depth to the brew, accentuating flavors of fresh-baked bread.
One sip, and you’ll realize how true that old Oaxacan saying really is. You’ll want to ride this 9.5% ABV carousel of flavor no matter what’s going on in your life!
Because for everything bad, there’s Return to Oaxaca. And for everything good, too.
This beer is too new for ratings!
