A Note on This Beer
The fortunate few who have tasted Scream — the brand-new Sour Ale from Anchorage Brewing — all seem to have the same questions.
Questions like, “what the heck is a haskap berry? “Why haven’t I even heard of this delicious fruit?” And, “are we even sure these are berries? They look peculiar.”
Seriously, give ‘haskap’ a Google. This is one unique lookin’ fruit, and it only grows way up north in places like Alaska and Siberia. In any case, head brewer Gabe Fletcher assures us that it is, in fact, a fruit. And, one taste of the bright and tangy berry flavors it adds to this brew has us convinced that it belongs in beer.
Especially THIS beer. The blueberry+raspberry+kiwi flavor of this little-known fruit beautifully balances the puckeringly tart base while complementing the mild, funky notes and hints of woody vanilla from 10 months in an oak Foeder.
If there’s anyone we trust to brew up a Sour with a bizarre berry we’ve never heard of, it’s Anchorage. And, judging by their LONG string of 4+ rated beers on Tavour, you all trust them, too.
So, if you’re looking for a brand new taste sensation, grab a bottle of Scream and get ready to introduce yourself to a cavalcade of fruity flavors you won’t find in any other beer. But, you might want to do a little research before you share this one with any friends.
After one sip, they’re practically guaranteed to ask, “what the heck is a haskap berry, and where do I get them?”
