A Note on This Beer

The fortunate few who have tasted Scream — the brand-new Sour Ale from Anchorage Brewing — all seem to have the same questions.

Questions like, “what the heck is a haskap berry? “Why haven’t I even heard of this delicious fruit?” And, “are we even sure these are berries? They look peculiar.”

Seriously, give ‘haskap’ a Google. This is one unique lookin’ fruit, and it only grows way up north in places like Alaska and Siberia. In any case, head brewer Gabe Fletcher assures us that it is, in fact, a fruit. And, one taste of the bright and tangy berry flavors it adds to this brew has us convinced that it belongs in beer.

Especially THIS beer. The blueberry+raspberry+kiwi flavor of this little-known fruit beautifully balances the puckeringly tart base while complementing the mild, funky notes and hints of woody vanilla from 10 months in an oak Foeder.

If there’s anyone we trust to brew up a Sour with a bizarre berry we’ve never heard of, it’s Anchorage. And, judging by their LONG string of 4+ rated beers on Tavour, you all trust them, too.

So, if you’re looking for a brand new taste sensation, grab a bottle of Scream and get ready to introduce yourself to a cavalcade of fruity flavors you won’t find in any other beer. But, you might want to do a little research before you share this one with any friends.

After one sip, they’re practically guaranteed to ask, “what the heck is a haskap berry, and where do I get them?”

“One of the nation’s best breweries.” — Hop Culture

Nicely sour, tangy fruit flavor that is mild but doesn’t get overpowered. Definitely give it a try.

Awesome bottle and art, great winey notes with a berry finish similar to raspberry. Very good barrel aged sour

Sour, is quite the understatement. The oak barrel flavors shine throughout as well. The berry kick is wonderful.

One of my all time favorite sours! Glad I bought two, but wish I drank the second bottle sooner. It poured a darker color that displayed 2nd time around

An amazingly funky sour ale, bottle conditioned with Haskap berries from Alaska. Aged on Missouri oak, this has just the right amount of tart fruit flavors that go well with a turkey dinner. Another great beer from Gabe & Co!

Deep, deep color, like red wine. On a hike, pluck a tart wild raspberry, right on the cusp between ripe and unripe. Not too sour, not too too sweet, although it does leave a nubbin of sugar clot in the throat if guzzled too greedily.

Literally the most sour ale ive ever come across! Outstanding berry flavor that is difficult to describe or even understand. The fermation from being aged 10 months in the oak foeder is quite noticeable. Fizzy, sour, berry and tart! A wondrful sour ale to the core!

Sour, but not overwhelmingly so. The haskap berry is a great flavor and very unique. Not as thick as it looks in the pic.

Daily corona battle. Screaming kids edition. Pours a beautiful ruby, starts tart but sweet and smooth. Finishes with smooth tartness. Anchorage good and well done. Oak aging is apparent but not overwhelming.

Honest to god, as an Alaskan native, these folks absolutely nailed the haskap berry flavor twisted with that oaky aged barrel finish. I know this isn't for everybody, but if you've got an open mind and see this around, I highly recommend grabbing a few to kick back with. Definitely my favorite to come from AK brewing so far!
