About This Beer
The multiple Maryland Craft Beer Competition medalists at Elder Pine brewed Sempiternal with beechwood, cherry wood, and mesquite smoked barley. Over 60% of the grain bill is smoked, complementing the complex chocolate, caramel, and biscuit malts.
Tasting Notes
One taste and you’ll immediately see why the brewers say, “Drinking this beer reminds us of having coffee and bacon for breakfast.” It’s a smoky sipper that engulfs semi-sweet baker’s chocolate and earthy espresso notes in the cozy essence of smoldering wood. And it’s swaddled in a silky-smooth body that juxtaposes the rustic char with a kiss of toffee.

Creamy head, smoky malt aroma, coffee taste with a hint of Nueskes’ cherrywood Smoked Uncured Bacon, silky mouthfeel, similar to a Rauchbier but with a lot more going on.

Terrible,
bacon grease beer.

I had high hopes but the smokiness was a bit overblown here and it contributed to some additional bitter notes I didn’t love. Gorgeous can artwork though.

While the smoked malts are not as aggressive as other rauchbiers, the experience is no less sublime: medium bodied, and both the aroma and flavor match that of a fresh cup of black coffee paired alongside cocoa-cured Nueskes’ pork belly.
