A Note on This Beer

There’s something special about that rustic, smoky flavor that comes from food and drink cooked over an open flame. Alaskan Brewing knows this: they use fire, flavor, and skill to create a Smoked Porter that’s ranked #5 in its style on BeerAdvocate.

The Smoked Porter is Alaskan’s more malty take on the German Rauchbier. In 1988, they became the first brewery to introduce this style of beer to the USA. Rauchbiers are deep black lagers that require smoking malt over an open flame. Upon this base, Alaskan slides one smooth step further by adding decadent hops that create notes of smoked meat, coffee, and caramel-crusted nut bread. This beer is intended for cellaring, and Tavour’s current batch has been evolving since 2016-- that makes its spices taste more sherry-soaked and its dark chocolate notes taste more like succulent chocolate-coated cherries.

Whether you’ve had a long day chopping wood, a long day hiking, or just a long damn day, this charred Porter will warm your soul and settle your bones. And yet, the sippable 6.5% ABV is not available in many of America’s great camping regions. Get it here, before the sun sets.

Smokey alder wood notes are enhanced as this porter ages. Very smooth finish and well balanced flavor all around.
