A Note on This Beer
Go bar-hopping in Denmark, and you’ll notice something else besides Mikkeller Brewing* on the menus — cherry wine from the country’s renowned winery, Frederiksdal. The winery makes this after-dinner delicacy with Sour Danish Stevns cherries for uniquely tangy, jammy earth notes you won’t taste in wine from other regions.
If you drink wine, that is. Fortunately for us craft beer lovers, Mikkeller brewed these exclusive cherries into delicious brew form!
It’s called Spontan Cherry Frederiksdal (2020 vintage), and man, is it one enchantingly complex Kriek Lambic.
In addition to fermenting on Frederiksdal’s famous tangy-tart fruit, the brewers aged the beer in oak for rounded nuances of woody spice plus softened layers of cherry and earth goodness. Let it linger on the tongue for a finishing whisper of almonds.
All the layers of flavor are meant to be enjoyed thoughtfully, with few distractions around you. And, if you really want to get into it, take a note from the Danish and savor it like a Frederiksdal cherry wine, alongside some dark chocolate or berries. It just might become your new favorite after-dinner treat!
