A Note on This Beer
I like to take a cooler full of today’s Superfly to beach parties or backyard barbecues and wait for someone to ask what I’m drinking. That’s my cue to go full beer-geek.
“Ever tried a Kellerbier?” I’ll ask.
Usually I’m met with a blank stare. Then I hand ‘em a can of Superfly and invite them to take a sip. After that comes my favorite part — watching their delighted reaction as they take another gulp, and then another. Then I nerd out and tell them all about the style. At some point I’ll ask for the can back.
Spoiler alert: no one ever gives the can back.
If you’re not familiar with Kellerbier, it’s basically a super flavorful unfiltered Pilsner. Visit a few venerable breweries in Germany and you’ll see stein after stein full of the stuff — they love it over there. But it’s pretty rare to find them on this side of the Atlantic.
Leave it to the brewers at Colorado’s Odd13 to bring Kellerbier stateside! These GABF winners brew all kinds of rarely-seen styles, and have even earned a spot as one of Eater’s Essential Denver Breweries. But away from the Rockies, their brews are mighty tough to find.
Obviously a brewery like Odd13 isn’t going to make a run-of-the-mill Kellerbier. They amped Superfly up Colorado-style with heavy additions of Huell Melon, Saaz, and Hellertau Blanc Hops. These hops create big citrusy notes and plenty of nuanced mango-melon flavors to compliment the beer’s malty body.
You’ll want to drink it all day, and at a crushable 5.5% ABV, you can!
Go ahead — bring a few cans of Superfly to your next summer get-together and let your buddies try something they’ve never had before. Just be prepared to give away practically every can in your stash once they do.
Chill Superfly to ice-cold for maximum summertime refreshment.
