About This Beer
Ever heard of pandan leaves? They’re widely used in South Asia to flavor a wide variety of foods, but we’re pretty sure this is the first time we’ve ever seen them in a beer!
And in the skilled hands of Breakside Brewing, the slightly lemony, vanilla-like flavor of this beautiful botanical adds incredible complexity to a barrel aged Stout.
The brewers started by blending 15 different hand-selected Heaven Hill barrels from their cellar — some containing Double Oat Stout aged 23 months, and some of Imperial Stout aged 21 months. Then they conditioned the blend on pandan leaf, pecan, marshmallow, nutmeg, and allspice.
Tasting Notes
Complex espresso and chocolate aromas from the base beer melt into hints of nuttiness and ginger-spice. The pandan adds welcome lemongrass nuances that balance nicely against the subtle sweetness of the marshmallow. Roasty coffee lingers on the palate, leading to a surprisingly dry finish. It’s a sip worthy of pairing with a dinner of steak or stir fry.
