A Note on This Beer

Today’s beer has its own top-secret, ultra-exclusive club in its honor, and it’s called The League of Extraordinary Chickow!

This group of devoted, cult-like fans have a waiting list for membership. And, their club website for buying and trading even requires a password — that’s how serious people are about getting their hands on today’s Chickow! Hazelnut Double Brown Ale!

Big and boozy, Chickow! is also the brew that put Ohio’s Listermann on the craft map. It is rated among the Top 20 Imperial Brown Ales on Untappd!

This flavor-bomb isn’t like the watery pints of import Brown Ale you guzzled on your study-abroad trip to Europe. It’s bold, lush, and decadent, just like a dessert Brown Ale should be.

Intense aromas of cacao nibs, roasted nuts, and toffee greet the nose from the thick-as-molasses pour. The first sip sends waves of dark chocolate balanced by real hazelnuts, hints of oaky vanilla, and figgy dates on the finish. These big flavors and the creamy mouthfeel beautifully mask the massive 10% ABV.

Whenever people post Chickow! on social media, their Dark Beer lovin’ buds flock like moths to a flame wondering where they got it. When it happens to me, I just smile and tell them: the first rule of the League is that you don’t talk about the League.

Liquid Milky Way candy bar. All milk chocolate and caramel (well, hazelnut really). Tasty and sweet without much to balance it out. Smooth mouthfeel with no alcohol warmth. Gets cloying after a while.

Honestly impressed with this. I would love to get more of these in my hands. I would give this to people as a first beer to try as well. It is just that good tasting. I couldnt find anything to critique about it. It checks all the boxes!

This is definitely one of the most delicious ales I’ve ever had. Immediately you can taste the sweetness which is so unusual for the ales I’ve had before. It’s almost half ale and half wine. Delicious and would order again. Very light and easy to drink. The 10% ABV is a nice touch too

Ordered from Tavour. Chilled and poured into an imperial pint glass. Look: dark brown (almost like a porter). Light tan head about a finger size that hung around while we drank. Nice light tan lacing that hung around. Smell: sweet roast, hazelnuts, vanilla, some booze Taste: taste follows the smell... sweet roast up front, some raw hazelnut then sweet roasted nuttiness, caramel and malt notes. We get some hop and bitter in the nose, followed by vanilla, booze and sweetness that is almost like a Baltic porter Feel: medium to heavy feel with a tickle of carbonation on the tongue. A bit of drying from the booze. For a drown, this is more like a porter. Sweet, malty, a little nutty (not much, boozy but well hidden in the sweetness. Confusing beer, but keeps you coming back because of the sweetness. Not sure of the hop note match with the rest going on in this one. Cheers?

Don’t know if it lived up to the hype, but a good brown ale nonetheless. Got two bottles, drank the first and it was really smooth and had a nice finish, used the second for a beer bread, and it was even better

Did not think I would like this one when I read about the hazelnut flavor, but the chocolate taste overpowers it and makes it all better. The flavor reminds me of a peanut butter porter I sampled. At any rate, I'd definitely try it again
