About This Beer

The barrel-aging wizards at Brewery Vivant go to the ends of the earth to craft their annually-released Belgian Quad. And this year’s variant has a higher ABV than ever before! They actually banish Wizard Burial Ground to the empty shafts of a gypsum mine, deep below ground — that’s where their cellar is! There, it quietly slumbers in bourbon barrels for an entire year. Then, as if summoned by a sorcerer’s spell, the brew awakens! The ground above trembles as rumbling masses of craft fans march to Grand Rapids for this rich, bourbon-drenched feast.

Tasting Notes

On the first sip, sticky toffee and boozy dates meld with otherworldly caramel tones. Another swallow brings plums, brown sugar, and a wisp of vanilla oak from the barrels. Wizard Burial Ground’s alchemy of powerful flavors remains etched on the palate long after the final drop is gone.

Wow. just, wow. Boozy, complex, and balanced. fruit flavors mixed with vanilla and alcohol that finish with caramel. Incredible. I wish I would have bought more.

Dark fruit and vanilla in the aromas and flavors. Solid medium body, with a pleasant boozy warmth at the end. Very nice. One of the better quads I’ve had.

Wow, quite a mediocre barrel-aged Quad. Either it’s a meh beer and great barrels, or a good beer with terrible barrels. Or maybe a little bit of meh of each. Don’t not get better with temp. I think I need to drop my rating.

Aroma of bourbon, caramel, and dark fruit. Raisin and toffee in the taste with bourbon present but not overwhelming, which is pleasant for 14%+ ABV.

This is the 2022 release that comes in at 14.3% ABV. Clear copper color. Brief bubbly white head. Toasted malt aroma hints at caramel and oak. Flavor upfront is sweet, oaky and boozy. Hot alcohol and sticky malt. Added notes of orange liquor, dried fruit, vanilla and bourbon. A bit overwhelming at first. Best if sipped slowly and perhaps shared with others.
