A Note on This Beer

The brewers at Colorado’s River North call their Decennial: God Complex Belgian Quad an “infallible Quadrupel Ale.” Yeah, they’re puffing their chests out a little, but it’s tough to argue with them.

In fact, take a sip of this 16% ABV beast — with its layers of toffee and candied dates that mingle among notes of vanilla and whiskey spice — and I expect you’ll feel like sticking your pinkies out, too. even agree.

That’s because the one and only thing wrong with this booze-soaked sipper is that the Best of Craft Beer award-winners never make enough — only 99 cases exist of this 2018 vintage and those will disappear before the labels are even dry!

But lucky for you, we were able to secure the only stash leaving Colorado. And with less than 400 check-ins on UT, getting your hands on a bottle will earn you the kind of bragging rights that most Barrel-Aged fiends could only dream of.

Like all the beers in River North’s Decennial series, God Complex can be cellared for up to a decade. But, if you’re anything like us and can’t resist diving in, it’s phenomenally yummy right now.

Crack open the wax cap and this boozy Belgian Quad overflows with rich notes of whiskey-soaked dark fruit and dried plums. Subtle oaky-vanilla harmonizes with faint woodiness and rich cocoa. Offer a taste to any lover of bold Dark brews and they will luxuriate in its boozy warmth.

If you’re patient enough to cellar this brew, the unbelievable ABV will mellow from warm and boozy to silky and smooth. The dried fruit flavors will grow into cascades of raisin and apricot, and notes of dark chocolate and molasses will reveal themselves more with each passing day.

Pop the top on this ultra-rare brew anytime between now and 2028 and you’re in for a truly decadent treat.

Flavor of rich bready malts, caramel, apple, banana, clove, nutmeg, some floral notes, and some plum. Whenever I see an American take on a Belgian style, I just assume it's going to be pretty far off. This pours more like a barkeywine, but honestly the rest of it is a pretty good approximation of a Quad. It's also just a really good beer on it's own merits. Could have done with some more candi sugar flavor for the Quad classification, but as a big, rich beer, it's a smooth slow-drinking treat. Definitely worth trying, worth cellaring, and something I would definitely pick up again.

Wonderful candied toffee flavor. Almost like a subtle brandy flavoring. The aftertaste could have been more prominent, but definitely a strong and unique front end.

Rich and butter toffee and butterscotch notes on the nose. Iconic Quadrupel flavors initially, but an almost overwhelmingly heavy hit of alcohol attacks all your senses and strikes your stomach with the first few sips. It’s is definitely a battle of amazing depth of flavor upon sipping and the beer fighting back with a boozy vengeance. It is without a doubt the most complex Quadrupel I’ve ever had. The fruity aftertastes remind me of cognac with wonderful rum reconstituted Golden Raisins and a slew of other booze-stewed dried fruits; especially stone fruits. You desire gulps of this at a time despite the repercussions of the beer counterattacking. God Complex is a very appropriate name for this as it kinda feels like it’s only worthy for the gods to drink. Like when you’ve had your first sip of Islay scotch and realize that this is something for a much more advanced drinker than yourself. This is definitely something to be respected and feared all at once.

Super complex with typical Belgian notes up front and then generous amounts of fig and prints prunes with some caramel sweetness. Such a good beer!

Incredibly smoooth. They say you can age this for a decade but it tastes so good why would you? I have two left - how long will they survive?
