A Note on This Beer
I can safely say that I did not see this coming!
If you were lucky enough to spot our stash of River North Brewery’s Decennial four-pack in December, you know those brews vanished just as quickly as they arrived. Now, through some form of boozy craft magic, we managed to get another small supply!
In case you need a refresher, River North is one of Colorado’s quintessential craft staples. They helped shape their Denver neighborhood into a major beer destination!
Their expertise shines extra bright in the Decennial series. Enjoy these 2020 vintages’ flavorful complexity now, or cellar them to enjoy mellowed heat and even more nuanced flavors in a year or so. Heck, you could even stow away all four bottles for a decade, just to wow the socks off future craft fans.
Just know that this special lineup usually only comes around once a year, and I’m still in complete awe we managed to get today’s tiny encore stash:
Decennial I: God Complex (2020) - Belgian Quadrupel - 16% ABV
The brewers call God Complex their “infallible Quadrupel Ale.” Which it very much is, with its intrepid booziness and bold layers of toffee, candied dates, and oaky vanilla flavors.
True to the Belgian Quad style, each sip tastes like it’s drizzled all over in caramel. The dark cherry and leather-soaked heat is very present in this new vintage, but you can expect it to soften to a nice, cozy warmth with time.
Decennial II: Shadowman (2020) - Imperial Stout - 14.5% ABV
The Shadowman pours dark as night, with dark cacao aromas hinting at all the dessert splendor swirling within. Take a sip of this Imperial Stout, and the chocolate flows into flavors of burnt sugar, molasses, and mocha ganache. There’s no actual coffee in this brew, but distinctive notes of roasty espresso glimmer throughout each luxurious mouthful.
The brewers say this beer, in particular, is meant for aging up to 10 years to experience even more refined, succulently sweet after-dinner flavors... if you can manage to wait that long.
Decennial III: Father Time (2020) - Barleywine - 15% ABV
Father Time’s tart stone fruit flavors and stealthy smooth body will stay pronounced and incredibly quaffable for years to come! This Barleywine boasts big caramel and dried apricot notes, punctuated with hints of delectable bread crust.
If you choose to save Father Time for future enjoyment, its candied fruit flavors will become even more pronounced. But, if you’re looking to mellow out the boozy heat, there’s no need. I don’t know how this deceptively silky brew clocks in at 15% ABV, but it does!
Decennial IV: Last Guardian (2020) - Golden Strong Ale - 15.1% ABV
Modeled after Belgian Golden Ales, Last Guardian pours an enticing sunset yellow and brims with fruit and baking spice complexity. Notes of freshly-baked bread drizzled in honey draw you in, leading to deeper flavors of ripe pear, orange, and cinnamon-sprinkled baked apples.
And while, yes, you could age it for an even smoother experience, the brew is already incredibly sippable, as is.
No matter which of these expertly crafted brews you choose to pop open first, there’s no going wrong. We have just over 300 bundles this time around though, so grab ‘em quick!
