A Note on This Beer

The kids at my school used to eat Jolly Ranchers candies by the bag full.

We even started a bootleg market during lunchtime to trade for our favorite flavors. Strawberry was the most valuable kind — some kids would trade up to 4 other pieces to get their paws on one of those sweet and tangy, pink cubes!

Today’s Double Strawberry Terminal Delight Cream Soda Sour has awakened some euphoric flashbacks to those days of sugar highs and hard candy wheeling and dealing.

To create it, the smoothie specialists at Junkyard Brewing doubled the flavor of their Fruited Sour recipe by combining ripe, juicy strawberry puree with ultra-potent strawberry concentrate, drippy plum and creamy vanilla. It tastes like they blended a Jolly Rancher into a smoothie!

They also magnified the experience with a bold 9.6% ABV.

If the now-grown kids from my schoolyard days heard about this, they’d be trading their Jamba Juice, Naked Juice, and Orange Julius all for a taste of Double Strawberry Terminal Delight.

Honestly, all of those drinks combined might not be enough — especially since today’s brew comes in a massive 750ml, wine bottle-sized can!

I really can’t place it, but this drink ain’t it chief. I guess I was expecting more creaminess, but it tasted more like a normal soda rather than a “cream soda”.

A really good sour. A good amount of strawberry flavors and near-perfect aromas. There is a creaminess from the lactose, but not similar to a cream soda. Maybe some nitro would have helped. There needs to be more sweetness or have the sourness and creaminess dialed down just a touch to really balance everything.

So this is fruity, and sour, which would be OK on its own. However this is the second time we purchased from junkyard on this app and we were hoping we would be surprised. Unfortunately it was the same. All junkyard beers, including this one, have a funky grandmas attic sort of flavor that is just overwhelming and yucky. We really really wanted to like this beer and this brewery but yet again we are disappointed.

I was really hoping for something magical, like I've come to expect from Drekker or Brewing Projekt. This falls very short of that. However, if you curb your expectations to that of your standard sour beer, you shouldn't be disappointed.

Not blaming anyone, but crowlers like that have a short shelf life. Should be opened within 2 weeks of canning. This one was canned in December of 2020, received in March of 2021. Flavors of strawberry there rest flat. Flat. If brewer made a smaller can, the flavor would of survived with bubbles pop and cream.
