A Note on This Beer

In the ‘70s, one of the hippest things you could bring to dinner was a big bowl of Green Fluff, also known as Pistachio Delight, Watergate Salad, or Green Goddess, among other names.

Unfamiliar? This surprisingly delicious treat is made from pistachio pudding, canned pineapple, whipped cream, and marshmallows.

But, enough about the ‘70s — we’re in the middle of the modern craft beer movement! The cool cats at Junkyard Brewing have updated this tasty dish into one funky fresh Golden Ale.

Those innovative brewers took copious amounts of real pistachios, pineapple, and marshmallows and added them to an already lusciously smooth Golden Ale base. Then, they canned up all that fluffy goodness in massive 750ml cans!

It’s “Green Fluff Pistachio Pudding Golden Ale,” and Junkyard’s fans are down with it:

It’s one outta sight, velour-smooth Golden Ale that’s a clear departure from anything you’ll find on the grocery store shelf. But, Junkyard brews are notoriously tough to find outside of Minnesota. Can you dig it?

Interesting flavor profile. I definitely get the pineapple and pistachio but it’s not as upfront as I was expecting. Very drinkable and smooth.

Junkyard is one of my favorites, but this was tge first brew I have had of theirs that I didn't love. I thought it was rather bland.

I like the mellow taste, but didn't get much pistachio flavor. maybe a little pineapple. the fat can is super cool.

This apparently was a dud it didn’t have any of flavor profile indicated. No pistachios, no pineapple, and no marshmallows. If there was ever a high class bud light this would be it. Hard pass!

I was expecting this to be a sickly sweet novelty, but instead it was just a nice pleasant drink. Kinda missed the mark on capturing the joy of Green Fluff, but it was fine if you forget that metric.

So nostalgic! My grandma used to make this dessert, and this tastes just like it . . . while still being very much a beer. I wasn’t sure if I would like it when I bought it, but I would buy it again. FYI, it’s not sour. Also, it’s a big can at 750 ml, so there’s plenty to enjoy!

I was intrigued by the ingredients used and it was a very uniques flavor. I’m more a fan of citrus but it was a fun experience to try something truly out there. kudos to Junkyard for the creativity.

While I appreciate when brewers try something new, this was not very good. From the taste to the mouth feel, I couldn’t finish it.

I can smell and faintly taste the pineapple, although it strangely comes across as more of Martinelli’s apple juice-esque. However, I don’t detect much of either the pistachio or marshmallow. Nevertheless, it’s a pleasantly smooth and easy-drinking ale, just not quite what I was expecting or hoping for. It was worth a try for the advertised unique flavor profile, though.
