A Note on This Beer
Friends,
Belgian’s famous Brouwerij Van Steenberge recently celebrated its 230th birthday. That’s right. Two. Hundred. And thirty years. The big two three zero, as we like to say. Van Steenberge mastered Belgian beer before the American Constitution was ratified.
How does a world-class brewery celebrate its 230th birthday? By doing something that they’ve never done before. Today’s Gulden Draak Brewmaster's Edition is Van Steenberge’s first foray into whiskey barrel aging.
Inspired by craft beer’s international culture, Gulden Draak Brewmaster's Edition is a blend of Belgian tradition and new-school American brewing innovation. It takes after the renowned Gulden Draak, once named the “Best Tasting Beer in the World” by the American Tasting Institute. Whiskey barreling makes Brewmaster's Edition smoother and more drinkable than its predecessor while adding delectable flavors of oak and vanilla.
Gulden Draak Brewmaster's Edition pours a deep, rusty orange. Kriek-like aromas of sour cherries and yeast funk blend with fig, plum, candi sugar and subtle Bourbon on the nose. Cherries and vibrant stone fruits arrive on the palate first, closely followed by notes of vanilla, apples and an undercurrent of creeping boozy warmth. Spicy Belgian yeast and brown sugar notes lead into a brilliant finish of well-developed whiskey and oak flavors.
A creamy mouthfeel makes Gulden Draak Brewmaste'rs Edition easy-drinking and helps to embed its 10.5% ABV. Of course, this one-time special release is a must-try for lovers of Belgian Strong Ales, but Brouwerij Van Steenberge’s finesse with whiskey barreling makes this a one-of-a-kind drinking experience that many will enjoy.
