A Note on This Beer

Confession: I avoid math like it’s the plague.

UNLESS we’re talking about an equation I actually care about, like, ‘Me + Beer = Happy.’ Or, in the case of today’s brew, ‘toffee-like, nutty malt + tantalizing hop bitterness = ESB (Extra Special Beer)’.

Okay, ESB doesn’t actually stand for Extra Special Beer, although it should! It stands for Extra Special Bitter, and it’s a classic English pub style known for its biscuity, malty undertones, and refreshing hop character.

Which the GABF gold medalists at Block15 absolutely nailed! To craft their A+ worthy version of the traditional style, they imported English malts and hops for flavors of toasted nuts, lavish caramel, and organic honey. A gentle, yet refreshing hop bite balances the malts’ dreamy, bready, mildly-spicy notes.

Now, it’s your turn to do some math! Sunshine + You + This Beer = ?

(Answer key: ? = a bangin’ good time)

Esb is a forgotten style and this is a very good one. Well rounded malt profile and very drinkable at 5%

This really puts the “bitter” back in ESB – a bit too much so, overwhelming any nutty, caramel flavors with a walloping bite on the backend. ESB = Extra Sharp Bitter?

Solid take on the English classic. Subtle and nicely balanced. Glad I went large on this order!

Good balance between malt character and bitterness. I feel this style is misrepresented by most American breweries, Block 15 got it right here. Not shying away from the bitter; it’s in the name, it better be bitter!

Malty, toasty flavor. Some light spice in there. If a hefe and brown ale had a baby it would be this. I look forward to trying more from Block 15. Reviewed live at twitch.tv/brewedforgaming

Caramel aroma, English malt with notes of toasted nuts, caramel, and honey, subtle hops bitterness, crisp, refreshing.
